  • If your green card is pending, you will receive a receipt notification from USCIS after you file Form I-485.

What about emergency trips?

The processing of travel documents can be accelerated in several ways. The death or serious illness of a close family member or close friend living in another country may require expedited processing of an application. USCIS will interview you and ask you some questions to confirm the emergencies mentioned.

It is highly recommended to make an appointment as soon as possible with the local USCIS office for those wishing to obtain travel documents or Advance Parole. This has been implemented as a time saving measure. Be sure to bring passport photos, documents or proof of emergency travel. Medical records or a signed note from a family doctor are often recommended when a family member dies.

In addition, the emergency travel document has no additional cost.

What are some travel tips to keep in mind when traveling on Advance Parole or Reentry Permit?

You cannot leave the United States until you have your physical travel document after successfully applying for Advance Parole. It will take 3-5 months to reach you, so plan to stay in the United States until you get the physical document.

Advance Parole paperwork often allows you to go abroad for up to a year. USCIS, for its part, reserves the right to cancel your permit for any reason. If this occurs, you will not be able to return to the United States unless you have a valid visa or other papers that allow you to do so.

When traveling abroad, remember that fingerprinting (biometric data) and an interview are required. Although your travel visa allows you to travel for up to a year, you will most likely miss many of these appointments if you do not return to the United States regularly. If you think you will be late for your appointment, follow the USCIS rescheduling procedures indicated in your appointment notice.

The same can be said for regularly receiving USCIS documentation by mail. It is advisable to make arrangements to receive mail when you go abroad or change your USCIS mailing address.
